    LET YOUR CHILD DO THINGS AT THEIR OWN PACE<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

    Potty training requires patience, perseverance and a sprinkle of good humor. Children typically learn to be potty trained between the ages of 2 and 4, but you must do things at the child’s pace as they first embark upon this learning process.<\/p>\n

    When is my child ready?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    To become potty trained, a child must first learn to control their sphincter. It is only around the age of 2 that a child can recognize the sensation of having “full” organs. The parent’s role is not to “teach,” but rather to support and guide the child through the potty training process. To successfully use the potty, your child must be physically and, more importantly, psychologically prepared. You must therefore trust them.<\/p>\n

    You may trust them in the following ways:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • They go to their potty themselves and sit on it by themselves.<\/li>\n
    • They partly undress themselves without your help.<\/li>\n
    • They remain dry for several hours.<\/li>\n
    • They tell you when their diaper is dirty (e.g. “pee” or “poo”).<\/li>\n
    • They are curious about this subject (e.g., they put their cuddly toy on the potty or they like stories about potty training).<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

      6 KEY STEPS<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n

      1\/ Do not force things
      \n<\/strong>The age that potty training is mastered varies from child to child. For this reason, don\u2019t set the age at which you believe your child should be potty trained. Instead, wait for signs of readiness, then do things at their own pace.<\/p>\n

      2\/ Choose the right time for your child
      \n<\/strong>There is no ideal time for potty training, but it\u2019s recommended to start during a peaceful period at home (e.g. don\u2019t do it while you\u2019re moving home or having a baby).<\/p>\n

      3\/ Familiarize them with the potty
      \n<\/strong>Put their potty by the toilet and explain its purpose. Then, invite them to sit on it, even with their clothes on, or to put their cuddly toy on it. At first, it will be a game. Encourage them to do what you do when they have to pee or poop. Praise them every time they try.<\/p>\n

      4\/ Set a routine
      \n<\/strong>Gradually get your child to sit on the potty at regular intervals: when they wake up, after meals and snacks, and before naps, baths and bedtime, but for no longer than 5 minutes at a time. Don\u2019t give them toys or books while they are sitting on the potty, so that they can focus on how their sphincter feels. If nothing happens, let them go back to playing without showing disappointment or making remarks.<\/p>\n

      5\/ Get them to start wearing underwear
      \n<\/strong>If your child starts to use the potty often, do not put them in a diaper during the day. They will therefore be more motivated to stay dry with cloth or training pants. Put on clothes that are easy to take off and remind them to go to their potty often. At this age, it\u2019s perfectly normal for them to forget to do this, especially if they\u2019re focused on playing, so don\u2019t put too much emphasis on their little accidents, but rather boost their self-esteem by encouraging them again and reminding them of their successes.<\/p>\n

      6\/ Completely remove their diaper
      \n<\/strong>Do they stay clean all day and their diaper is dry during several naps? If so, then it\u2019s time to get rid of it. You must also apply the same method overnight. Until then, even if you put them in a diaper overnight, encourage them to call you if they want to go to their potty during naptime or in the night.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

        While you\u2019re still not fully confident, put a diaper or training pants on them. But if you\u2019re only going out for a bit and have easy access to a restroom, see what they\u2019re like in normal underwear. Tell them to go to their potty before you leave and take a change of clothes with you. Plan frequent stops on longer journeys and don\u2019t make them drink too much just before you leave.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        If they refuse, let them poop in a diaper. Otherwise, they may hold it in and become constipated. Constipation can cause pain while passing stool. If your child is in pain, it will take even longer for them to become potty trained. When they are ready, they will go to their potty by themselves.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        It\u2019s common for children to appear to regress in the learning process after successful episodes on the potty. If so, don\u2019t argue with them and don\u2019t become discouraged. Re-start the process from the very beginning, helping them pay attention to how their sphincter feels. And most importantly, don\u2019t forget to congratulate them when they make progress.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

        Consult a doctor if your child is over 4 years old and refuses to go to the potty, seems unable to hold it in or shows no interest in potty training, despite all your efforts and encouragement. The doctor can then try to identify the reasons for this refusal or difficulty, whether psychological or physiological.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
